Shortreed kindergarten students and Bellevue senior residents came together for a holiday visit on the morning of Dec. 18.

Kindergarten students and seniors came together for a morning of shared activities and an unexpected visit from Santa at Bellevue Park Senior Living community on Thursday, Dec. 18.

The visit was part of the Grandbuddies program, which brings Shortreed Elementary kindergarten students to the residence once a month to spend time with seniors.

Kindergarten teacher Cooper Bowers said the program is something her students eagerly anticipate.

“This warms my heart,” Bowers said. “I love it, and the kids really look forward to it.”

She said the energy in the room speaks for itself.

“Look at everybody. They’re so happy and they’re engaged with each other,” she said. “I love watching them grow.”

The children work on crafts, talk with residents, and learn how to socialize across generations.

The program allows both seniors and young children to stay active and engaged through conversation and hands-on activities.

This month’s visit included a short singing performance by the students, followed with crafts.

Santa also arrived unannounced in the middle of craft time, quickly drawing gasps and excited chatter from the children. One student jumped up to give him a hug, while others patiently waited for high fives.

When a child asked if Santa’s beard was real, he reassured them it was. He later handed out candy canes before heading on his way.

The children and seniors sat together making Christmas-themed bracelets and chatting about their holiday plans.

They later finished the morning by crafting reindeer ornaments.

Bowers was supported by two special education assistants during the visit to help keep the morning running smoothly.

The Grandbuddies program continues throughout the school year, offering regular opportunities for children and seniors to build friendship, share stories, and spend meaningful time together.
